SALT Tours

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is located at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) site in Sutherland.

SALT tours have been scheduled for the weekend after CAP2010.  The following options are available:

  • Same day trip (departing at 07:00 on 20/03 and returning at 21:00 on 20/03): ZAR400 pp excluding meals
  • 1 night 2 days (departing at 08:00 on 20/03, returning at 17:00 on 21/03): ZAR900 pp including accommodation and meals
  • 2 nights 3 days (departing at 08:00 on 20/03, returning at 17:00 on 22/03): ZAR1500 pp including accommodation and meals

During the day, all attendees will receive detailed guided tours (from observatory staff) of SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) as well as other research telescopes in Sutherland (see www.saao.ac.za for facilities in Sutherland). There will also be optional tours of the historic town of Sutherland. Those staying overnight will be treated to a night tour of the southern sky using our 14" Celestron and 16" Meade visitor telescopes. Kevin Govender from the SAAO (and SPOC for IYA South Africa), will be available for the entire duration (20/03 to 22/03) in Sutherland as your personal host and for any additional special requests during the visit. You will be well taken care of during this adventure and a clear night will ensure you have the experience of a lifetime.

Please note that the drive to Sutherland takes approximately 5 hours one way from Cape Town (including a short stop for a break and fuel).

Those interested in this opportunity to visit Sutherland on any of the above packages should contact Chris de Coning (siriusa@absamail.co.za) and copy the email to Kevin Govender (kg@saao.ac.za).
