Lunch meetings

Participants of this conference with a need for smaller separate meetings are welcome to contact us and suggest a Lunch meeting ('by invitation only' or 'open for all'). The organiser will take care of registrations etc. him/herself.

So far the following meetings are scheduled:

• Tue 14.06 12:45 Meeting room 231 - Fits Liberator development:
  The idea is to discuss the current status of development of the ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator, the short-term strategy (for v.2) and the long-term strategy for the project. If we manage to implement it correctly, v.2 will have some nice functionalities, some of which have interesting implications for "next generation pretty picture archiving".

• Wed 15.06 12:45 Meeting room 231 - IAU Year of Astronomy 2009.
  This meeting is organized in order to spread the information about the IAU proposal to declare 2009 The Year of Astronomy. The request will be examined by Unesco (and subsequently, by the General Assembly of the United Nations), probably next Fall. It is hoped that the lunch meeting will stimulate bright idea in the following areas:
  • How to make sure that the request is approved, with support of the national Unesco delegations in various countries.
  • Specific suggestions for initiatives during the Year of Astronomy, both at the national and international level.

• Thur, 16.06 12:45 Meeting room 231 - Astronomical "hands-on" experiments for science events:
  With the growing number of general science events, "hands-on" experiments are
  increasingly important to bring people in contact with science (and scientists).
  Observing with a (solar) telescope is probably the most attractive "experiment",
  but strongly weather dependent. The purpose of this lunch meeting would thus be
  to collect and exchange ideas and experiences for easy and mobile astronomical
  experiments.

• Thur, 16.06 12:45 Meeting room 232 - Virtual Repository/Outreach metadata. A draft proposal for a set of Metadata to be 'attached' to all 'pretty pictures' in the future has been written. The idea for this meeting is to discuss this list and try to reach a consensus.
